We are Lauren and Andrew. We are explorers, idealists, and pragmatists*.
We were married in California in 2017 and arrived on the Hamakua Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii in early 2022. This blog documents our triumphs and our failures as we learn how to create Home in this modern world. Our dream is that “our” will come to encompass more than the two of us.
Berries and Figs
The name for our blog is inspired by our 30-second version of the story for why we moved to Charlottesville in 2019. We were living in Vermont in the late spring of 2018. We love Vermont and have nearly talked ourselves into settling there many times. But we’ve always been concerned about the long winter. Around this time, we got in our heads that it would be spectacular to be able to grow figs, so Lauren searched “Where can you grow blueberries and figs and sweet potatoes.” In Charlottesville, apparently. Thus, berries and figs.
Hey, maybe we’ll see if we can wring some berries and figs out of this Hawaiian volcanic soil.
*What is pragmatic to one might be insanity to others.
